Changemakers, Our Work for Students

Senior Mentor of the Year: George M. Walters, Jr.

Senior Mentor of the Year: George M. Walters, Jr. - Champions For Learning - The Education Foundation of Collier County

Anyone who knows George Walters knows that he has fully invested himself in the Take Stock in Children program. George was first encouraged by his wife, Ann, to become a mentor. Seeing the impact that his wife made with the young ladies she has mentored, George became committed as well.

“Being named Senior Mentor of the Year is a distinct honor,” says George. “I speak for all mentors in saying “thank you” Champions for the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of students.”

George loves to work with young people and is currently mentoring Benjamin(Ben) Nguyen, a senior at Golden Gate High. With George’s support and guidance, Ben became a volunteer with Naples Community Hospital, which aligns with his goals of becoming a physician.

“George taught me that you couldn’t excel if you didn’t rise to your potential,” says Ben. “Through his encouragement and support at our weekly meetings, I found myself involved in a number of school clubs, service organizations, and even sports. Thanks to Take Stock and Champions for Learning I was given a hero, and most importantly, a best friend.”

George has also become a strong advocate of this program and mentoring through other volunteer roles related to Champions For Learning, and also through his service on the Board of Directors.
